Written News Story of the Video (500 words)

With well over 200 Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks and other types of coffee shop locations in Nassau County it’s unusual that the issue of the negative way coffee affects the body isn’t address more often. There have been recent studies done showing that coffee may have good effects on the brain but what about the rest of the body?

Caffeine is a stimulant sometimes used to treat headaches but more often it’s the main ingredient central ingredient in coffee. It’s also addictive and it allows your body over time to become dependant on it. The caffeine in coffee is what causes the most concern. A study done and published in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology showed that coffee increases the chances for men to have a stroke.

Samantha Kaufman, an employee at Starbucks Coffee agrees that “people who come into the store multiple times a day don’t realize the health risk…wow I didn’t even realize them!” She also adds that regulars who come into the coffee shop are normally the ones who ask for the double shots of espresso. This adds a lot more caffeine to your beverage which is where the risk of your health becomes a little bit more threatened.

The American Dietetic Association met and discussed the issue of drinking too much coffee. Within that, they discussed how studies have been done showing that drinking more that three cups of coffee a day can affect a woman’s fertility. It can also increase a pregnant woman’s chance of early delivery. Lastly they also discussed that studies are currently being done testing whether coffee causes birth defects.

Nassau County holds countless numbers of coffee shops and people more than willing to use them. Hofstra University is located in Nassau County where students study hard and drink plenty of coffee for those rough nights of studying and hard mornings of class. Dewayne Whitaker, a student at Hofstra University used to average 5-6 cups of coffee a day. “I began to have stomach aches and I became very irritable whenever I didn’t drink my necessary amount of coffee per day,” Whitaker states.

Coffee and caffeine has its negative and positive effects but it’s only fair to the public for everyone to know both sides.

Lilian Pruden: Regsitered Working Nurse of Over 20 Years

Some of the negative effects of caffeine is it makes you hyper. Its addictive and actually addictive physically addictive because if you withdraw from it after you've been using it a lot you can get all the symptoms of addiction and cold turkey withdraw that anyone can get from narcotics. It stunts growth, and the growth of a baby. If your pregnant and your consuming a lot of it before you deliver the baby will be hyper because it would have gone in the babies system. Other than needing to get up, awake and move, there is no other reason for drinking it other than it taste good.

Dewayne Whitaker: Excessive Coffee Drinker

Hi, I'm Dewayne and I'm a chronic coffee drinker. I drink between 5-6 cups of coffee a day. it got to a point where my stomach really started to be upset all the time. I had to use the bathroom a lot so I went to my doctor and he told me I had to cut back on the caffeine. He said I was drinking too much. I mean without it I was irritable, cranky and all of my friends would ask me whats wrong with me and it was defiantly the coffee.

Samantha Kaufman: Starbucks Employee of 6 Years

Hi, I'm Samantha and ive been an employee of Starbucks coffee for about 6 years and I was unaware of all the effects that caffeine has on people. Throughout the years I've seen a lot of people come into the store especially the regulars who come into the store about 3-4 times a day and they need that caffeine fix. You can tell that they need the caffeine and I was unaware of all the health concerns. They come in and get shots of espresso. I had one woman even tell me that she had to cut back on her 10 shots of espresso (which is a little excessive to begin with) because she had high blood pressure and she almost had a stroke. So I'm starting to understnad what the actual problem is with caffeine.

Production Memo

Working on my final project over the course of this semester was no easy task. As I began to think of a topic to use for my project I first focused on things the effected Hofstra university students the most because not only are the located in Nassau County, but I am apart of that community of people. Choosing to talk about the negative effects of coffee was quite easy for me to decide on because as I would sit in each of my classrooms, more than half of the class would be drinking coffee of some sort.
After I made that decision, I began to research via the internet all the negative effects of drinking coffee. One thing that I noticed during this process which could have been a downfall for my entire project was that there are many positive effects of coffee that are just beginning to surface. I decided to continue with my negative effects of coffee subject matter after speaking with a doctor who informed me that its still a great thing that people know about the negative effects because they are severe and life threatening. The positive effects of drinking coffee have not been studied as well and they probably wont save your life.
Collecting more information on my subject was not a hard task but finding a doctor to interview on camera was the hardest challenge I had to face. During this time, I did learn how to speak to people in a professional setting and I also learned how to get around challenges that could have ruined my project to get the information that I wanted like a true journalist.
Anyone who will be taking this course within the near future I do have a little bit of advice for you. Only invest your time in reliable sources, do not get started with this project late or you wont have enough time to finish, and remember that trying your best is what counts the most.
